- A: Thanks for choosing Purina. We recommend waiting until your birds are at least 18 weeks old. In a perfect world, you would not give any scratch to your birds at any age. The starter and layer feeds are complete feeds. Feeding scratch dilutes the nutrition in the complete feeds and affects growth and production of the animals. However, if you choose to feed scratch grains, we suggest it be 10% or less of the total diet (that would include table scraps as well). Excellent choice! I have been using Ourina Organic pellets for many years. My hens are thriving and laying regularly all year long nto their third year. Great value; less dust. It's worth a little extra money for this quality.
