Cat Flea & Tick Treatments

At Tractor Supply, we recognize that fleas and ticks are an unfortunate reality of the feline world. These pests can torment your cat by leaving them with serious ailments, such as anemia, itchy skin, tapeworm and heartworm infections, and Lyme disease. Fortunately, our selection of preventative flea and tick products can help to tackle even the worst of  infestations.

Finding The Right Treatment Products for Your Cat

At Tractor Supply, we want to help you find the right flea and tick medication for your pet, which is why we highly recommend consulting a vet to learn more about your cat’s specific needs. Then, we can help you to find the products, either prescription or over-the-counter treatments, that will best remedy infections and fend off those pesky fleas and ticks.

  • Prescription: Treatment requires a consultation with your veterinarian. Because prescription tick and flea treatments can be customized to meet your pet’s needs, the dosage of the medication is more regulated and can be more potent. If you’re looking for prescription flea and tick medication for your cat, our PetVet clinic veterinarians can recommend the best course of action.

  • Over-the-counter: These medications do not require a referral from a veterinarian, so you can purchase these kinds of products directly from the shelves in your local Tractor Supply store. For this reason, they serve as a readily available and quick remedy for your cat’s flea and tick treatment needs.

Types of Cat Flea and Tick Treatment Methods

Whether you opt for prescription treatment or the over-the-counter alternatives, you will also have to decide what medium of medication works best for you and your cat’s lifestyle. In some cases, orally-ingested tablets and pills may work best, while for other cats, topical treatments like ointments, shampoos and flea collars are appropriate.

  • Oral: Oral medications are ingested by your cat in either pill or chewable tablet form. Once consumed, oral flea and tick treatments secrete a chemical repellent throughout the sebaceous glands of your cat. This chemical repellent acts to effectively deter fleas and ticks to ward off  infection before it starts and, in many cases, acts to kill fleas and ticks once they have latched.

  • Topical: Topical solutions are applied directly to your cat’s fur in a variety of forms, including sprays, ointments, shampoos and powders. Like oral medications, topical treatments repel ticks and fleas by emitting a chemical deterrent. Fortunately, you do not need to worry about the treatment being washed off by visits to the groomer or bath time because many topical treatments are water-resistant and can last for up to a month or more.

During flea and tick season, you may want to consider taking additional measures to keep these pests away from your furry feline friend. At Tractor Supply, we offer repellents and foggers for your home and yard that will better protect your pet by working to eliminate fleas and ticks from your cat’s environment. Additionally, to be as prepared as possible for infestations, try using flea combs and other accessories as a preventative step. When utilizing these products in combination with your regularly scheduled treatments, you will be better able to ensure your feline’s health and happiness.
