Q&As

Q: Is this safe for a marine out board ?

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! Standard automotive Lucas 80W-90 gear oil is not safe for a marine outboard because it lacks the specialized emulsifiers needed to protect gears when water leaks into the lower unit.

Q: is this GL4 or GL5?

1 Answer

Q: Can this be used in place of ep 90

1 Answer
  • A: Howdy neighbor! Yes, you can typically use Lucas Oil 80W-90 Gear Oil in place of a straight EP 90, as it is a multi-grade oil designed to provide the same protection at operating temperatures while offering better flow during cold starts.

Q: Will this work with hyoid differentials

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. It is formulated for use in many differentials, including standard, hypoid, and limited‑slip types. However, we recommend always checking your vehicle’s owner manual or manufacturer specifications before use. Some differentials may require a different viscosity or a specific OEM-approved fluid, and using the wrong type could cause damage.

Q: Can I use this in my snowblower

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. We would need more information about your specific model to make a good recommendation. You can use Lucas 80W-90 gear oil in your snowblower only if your snowblower’s manual specifies SAE 80W-90 gear oil for the gearbox. If the manual calls for a different lubricant (like a specific grease or another oil type), you should use that instead.

Q: 1.Is it synthetic? 2.And does it have a slip additive in it?

1 Answer
  • A: No, it is not synthetic. It's a conventional, mineral-based petroleum oil. For a full synthetic version, Lucas offers a 75W-90 Gear Oil. Yes, it contains a limited-slip additive. The formula is fortified with an embedded friction modifier, making it suitable for use in both standard and limited-slip differentials without requiring additional supplements.

Q: Can I use this in a ATV

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. It can be used in many ATVs where 80W‑90 gear oil is recommended. However, some ATVs require a specific gearcase fluid. Always check your owner’s manual to be sure it’s the correct type.

Q: Can I use it for my pick up rearend

1 Answer
  • A: Yes, Lucas Oil 80W-90 Gear Oil is designed for heavy-duty applications and can be used in the rear differential of most pickup trucks, provided it matches your truck's specifications. However, you must confirm that 80W-90 is the correct weight and that your vehicle requires a GL-5 rated gear oil. Using the wrong fluid can cause premature wear and damage.

Q: Is this gear oil reciprocal for Ariens L3 gear oil?

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. Per the vendor, "The Ariens L3 Gear Oil is a full synthetic fluid and looks to be a 75w80. Our 80w90 item #10043 is a conventional fluid. We would recommend our Synthetic SAE 75w90 Gear Oil item #10047. The synthetic gear oil would be better for fluid flow during cold ambient temperatures."

Cheaper Store Travelers Brand Recommend

Probably not worth the extra cost of the name, especially if your use is in older vintage farm equipment. Not really a bad product but I would recommend the Travelers Brand for cost especially if you are using this product in vintage equipment that will probably leak. I hate buying an expensive lubricant only to discover a leak and watch the $$$$ spent just lost. Not bad if using it in newer equipment and I'm sure meets all the lube requirements. Vintage go with the cheaper alternative in my humble opinion.
