Originating in Spain, the Black Mission fig tree produces sweet, purplish-black skinned fruits with strawberry-colored flesh that ripen into a rich flavor. The ficus carica mission fruit appears in early spring and ripens in a sunny spot. The sweet, pear-shaped fruits with delectable red flesh make the Black Mission Fig tree highly desirable for fruit tree growers. We love these black fruit-producing trees, they can even grow as patio fruit trees in small spaces. Loaded with flavor and vitamins, black figs are great for jellies and jams, and healthy, on-the-go snacking. Black fig trees produce fruit 2 times a year - one in late summer and a second in early fall. They may even produce a breba crop in the early spring. This self pollinating fruit tree is the package deal for fresh fig trees!

  • The best way to enjoy fresh Black mission figs is to eat them raw, with the skin and seeds. You can remove the skin and seeds if you like and they are often used in cooking, But nothing beats taking a bite out of a fresh ripe Black Mission fig!
  • The Black Mission Fig tree is self pollinating and one of the most popularly grown backyard trees. The Black Mission Fig tree will only produce fruit two times a year but can yield more fruit if grown with more Black Mission Fig trees.
  • On average, the Black Mission Fig tree can reach a height of around 10 to 40 feet tall and 60 feet wide, making them an excellent and popular choice for backyard shade trees that produce fresh and delicious fruit. A Dwarf Black Mission Fig Trees or a pruned tree will usually only grow to about 12 to 15 feet tall.
  • Yes, Black Mission figs are a tasty treat that have tons of nutritional value and health benefits. Black Mission figs are low in calories and have high amounts of fiber. They also contain manganese, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamins K and C, calcium and are a good source of antioxidants.
  • All fig trees, including Black Mission fig trees, are pollinated by very small wasps of the family Agaonidae, which allow for the trees to be pollinated on their own or without a second tree. However, commercial figs, or figs bought in stores, are not pollinated or grown with wasps. Don't worry though, because whether purchased from a store or picked from a tree in your backyard, you're unlikely to find a wasp inside of any fig you eat!
  • How To Care For Black Mission Fig Tree This perennial fig tree is a heavy bearer of large size fruit and thrives best in full sun and average, well-drained soil. This makes it a great choice for easy to grow fig varieties that are long-lived. Plant the fig trees where the soil is dry and well-drained. You can even plant the black mission fig tree in a container if you live in an area with harsh winters. To establish a strong Black Mission Fig Tree root system, in the first year of planting be sure to thoroughly water the black fig tree a few times a week. Fertilize the tree once a year with a slow-release pellet based tree fertilizer like ours. Planting and caring for this fruit tree cant get easier! The Black Mission Fig cold hardiness is limited. These trees prefer the southern United States, the black mission fig growing zones are 7-10. This fig tree requires no chill hours. Its deciduous leaves fall off every winter so don't be fooled into thinking it is not alive. Come spring and the mission fig leaves will flush out of control. Prune your fig tree after all frost has occurred for the year. You can cut off any crossing or dead branches to encourage new growth during the spring growing season. This will help the tree grow to full maturity up to 30 feet tall after many years. Our Black Mission fig trees for sale are not bare root trees. They come rooted in a container in the soil for the health and safety of the tree.

Figs this Fall

Live (3 gallon) Black Mission Fig arrived at my local TSC ahead of schedule (of which I was notified via email of it's availability), it was packed in a stapled box with handles, the plastic planting container was securely boxed with the correct size to minimize trauma, in a plastic cover and had been watered prior to shipping to maintain good health. When we unpacked the fig which was very healthy, full of dark green leaves and new spouts evident. The fig came with great directions for planting which was very helpful. We planted the fig and it has already up on new leaves and is doing great! I think this plant will do better than if I had bought one of the normal arrivals in the store in the early spring. We are looking forward to figs this fall and will certainly order other plants online from TSC in the future.
