The green foliage of the Sweet Viburnum bush is smooth textured and covered in dark green leaves. Tiny fragrant white flowers are held in loose, branching clusters that develop in early spring, are pleasantly sweet smelling, and cover the plant.
The shrubs red berries turn to blue black and are attractive to birds, but they are sparingly produced in Florida. The red fruit appears later in the year as the plant exhibits beautiful fall foliage and gives viburnum excellent winter interest.
The Sweet Viburnum growth rate is also why its a favorite it can grow 1-2 feet per year. The Sweet Viburnum height can grow very large up to 25-30 feet tall and 15-25 feet wide at mature size making it a nice privacy hedge or windbreak.
This fast growing viburnum plant prefers growing in slightly acidic, moist, well drained soil and is moderately drought tolerant. Grows best in full sun to partial shade. The bloom time for its extremely fragrant flower clusters is in spring and it can handle a wide range of soil types except for wet soil conditions which lead to root rot.
Viburnum odoratissimum grows best in the US Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8-10 (not the most cold hardy). It is beautiful, versatile, and rarely bothered by pests or disease. This aesthetic plant can be potentially a very large evergreen shrub or small viburnum tree.
The best time of the year to plant this viburnum evergreen is anytime! It does best in southern climates therefore you can plant it any time of year except in freezing temperatures. Prune your viburnum tree after the green bush has finished flowering for the best results. You can even prune it into a small tree.
