Q: Can these seeds be planted for a sun flower crop growth?

1 Answer
  • A: We would estimate 50% would sprout , but this is not guaranteed. You could experiment by adding a few seeds in 1/2 inch of dirt in a cup and see what sprouts in a week

Q: Has the issue with excessive grit and debris in the bag been resolved?

1 Answer
  • A: “We are sorry to hear that you had a less than perfect experience. Our cleaning process for this product has not changed. From time to time, you will find parts of the sunflower in the bag along with the seed. This is called chaff. Chaff is any part of the sunflower that remains after the seed has been cleaned. This could be leaves, stems, seed casings or any part of the sunflower head.”

Q: I noticed that Royal Wing mentions that these seeds are sourced from a variety of producers that use herbicides / pesticides. Would these sunflower seeds still be safe for feeding poultry that are raised for meat/eggs as a snack / portion of their diet?

1 Answer
  • A: Our products are sourced from a variety of farmers who use diverse methods of conventional agriculture based on what is best for their local growing conditions. We require that grain delivered to our bird food production facilities comply with all USDA, FDA, and EPA regulations. However, this product is not intended for chickens as it is for wild bird feeding.

Q: I recently bought a bag of Grey Striped Sunflower Seed. I also found a lot of debris. Many shells, some sort of compressed something. This is not typical. Occasionally I'd find a twig or 2, nothing like what I have. Are you processing differently?

  • A: I have 3 Parrots , African Grey, Cockatoo and a Large Blue and Gold Macaw. I used these seeds for 40years for my parrots and they love them. This is the only store that has them all year long. I also add a mix of parrot food with it to make up any nutrients needed. Also, I suggest Peanuts and an Almonds and walnut mixture. Do not just feed the birds with just the seeds. My birds are 25-40 years old and very healthy. The main diet is the stripped seeds along with all the other stuff I mentioned. The sizes are mostly med-large and a very good clean product. Also I add dryed banana chips sweetened.

Q: What is the difference between Gray Striped and Black Oil sunflower seed? Pros & Cons?

1 Answer
  • A: Striped sunflower seed is larger and has a tougher striped shell. Jays, titmice, cardinals, grosbeaks and woodpeckers love striped sunflower and can handle the tougher, larger shells. Black oil seed has oil in the name refers to the higher oil content per gram in this smaller sunflower seed. Cardinals, chickadees, finches, sparrows, nuthatches, and many other birds prefer black oil sunflower over any other seed because of its high fat content and thinner shell which makes it easier for birds to open.
